Why I made this.
I think the act of gifting should be conscientious, rather than negligent.
Every year, billions of pounds worth of unwanted gifts end up in landfill. We buy things out of obligation, without knowing what people will want. We waste money and resources at an astronomical rate.
I'm not against buying things. I love a good purchase as much as anyone. But I do think we can be smarter about it. Brands like Shein and Temu have built empires on the back of ultra-cheap, ultra-disposable goods, made in conditions that are deeply troubling, and designed to fall apart so you buy more. That's the kind of consumption I think should be discouraged.
Giflit is my small attempt to shift things slightly. A wish list is just a way of saying "if you're going to spend money on me, here are some things that won't end up in landfill (or in storage)".
It's free because who the hell would pay for a gift list? Honestly.
